Some US dental insurance plans will offer partial reimbursement for dental implants done in Mexico, but it is never guaranteed and depends entirely on your individual carrier. Most insurance companies treat international dental work as an out of network service. This means you usually pay out of pocket at the clinic and then submit your receipts to your insurance provider once you return home. If your plan includes out of network benefits, they may refund a portion of the cost after reviewing your claim. If your plan does not have out of network coverage, they will not reimburse anything.
Many of our patients at SOTA Dental bring detailed treatment plans, invoices, and X rays back to the United States so their insurance company has everything required to process a claim. Sometimes insurance covers part of the diagnostic imaging, the implant itself, or the final crown, but every policy is different. It is always best to call your provider before your trip and ask if they reimburse for international out of network dental implant procedures. We can provide you with all documents needed for the claim, and many patients do receive at least some reimbursement. However, because policies vary so much, it is important to treat any potential reimbursement as a bonus rather than something to rely on.
