Zygomatic Implants

Zygomatic Implants are a special kind of implant that are designed to replace teeth in the maxillary arch (upper jaw) of your mouth.

The doctor will use these implants to replace a single tooth, or multiple teeth that have been damaged by decay or trauma. Also, Zygomatic implants can support an entire arch of prosthetic teeth that cannot be supported by the jaw due to severe bone loss. Furthermore, Zygomatic implants can be incorporated with regular dental implants on the lower jaw to restore function to both arches of your mouth.

This procedure is a last-resort solution if you have major bone loss in your upper jaw, Zygomatic implants can restore your teeth if you have suffered severe facial trauma. Also, they can help you if you have had major bone loss from a severe case of gum disease. Our doctors at SOTA Dental choose patients on a case-by-case basis. They select them on the potential success of the procedure.

What Makes Zygomatic Implants Different than Standard Dental Implants?

A Maxillofacial Surgeon places Zygomatic implants in your Zygomatic bones. These are the bones in your face that support your cheeks, eyes, and general facial structure. These bones are key in supporting the structure of your face and making it look symmetrical.

Unlike conventional implants, the doctor will not simply place them in your jawbone. The doctor will place them in a different location and drill them in at a specific angle. In other words, these implants will go much deeper into your face. The implant is by your cheekbones. Thus, you’ll need an experienced Maxillofacial Surgeon to do this procedure properly.

Why Would You Need Zygomatic Implants?

If you are a patient with severe bone loss in your upper jaw then this procedure is a last resort. Also, this is for you if you have a lot of missing bone that a sinus lift bone graft cannot fix.

If the procedure is successful, then these implants can support your new set of teeth in your upper jaw.  The bones in your face will support the weight and bite pressure from your upper jaw.

You can have a consultation with us at SOTA Dental if you’d like to understand the possibilities for your case.

How Zygomatic Implants Work?

A Zygomatic implant is much longer and designed differently than a standard dental implant because it has threads on each end. You will carefully plan your treatment using digital X-ray imaging technology. The doctor will take a digital X-ray of your face to measure your bone density and calculate the angles for your implants. After the doctor has calculated the angles, you will come in for your surgery, and they will place your Zygomatic implants according to plan.

After that, your dentist will give you time to heal so your implants can integrate into your bones. Your gums may heal within 7-10 days. However, it may take your body up to 5 months for it to integrate the implants into your bones.

You will need to follow your doctor’s instructions to ensure that your implants heal properly. Also, you may need to come back for routine appointments to monitor your healing. Once the implants have integrated into your bones, then the doctor places the abutment and crown over them. After that, you will have prosthetic teeth placed in your mouth that resemble your natural teeth.
